Ways to make solar plant more efficient

Everyone is looking for ways to make a solar plant more efficient and cost effective. The effectiveness of any energy conversion process for example solar system can be measured by comparing how much energy goes in and how much comes out.

We all know that a solar system mainly consists of solar panels, inverters, ACDB, DCDB and mounting structures. Efficient system means designing and installation of each of these major parts in such a way that it operates at maximum power and minimum losses. There are certain parameters which influence the performance of entire solar plant, the major of them are discussed below.

First and foremost is SRA (Solar Resource Assessment and site Survey), Solar resource assessment is analysing Irradiation, Temperature & Wind Velocity through different sources. This data helps us in finding out perfect place for solar installation and in choosing proper tilt and azimuth. This is helpful in designing more efficient system.

Before designing the system, estimating exact capacity as per area and consumption is very necessary. Choosing proper components, for example if we are choosing 1000V module we can’t use 1500V inverter. Moreover, overloading plays, a vital role in solar plant as the inverter manufacturers recommends above 30% - 50% overloading but, considering at its maximum level it also leads to clipping losses. Therefore, one need to ensure this is done within given standards.

When it comes to cabling, many EPC players try to reduce cable size by increasing voltage drop but increasing voltage drop will leads to other losses. One shall use DC and AC cable of proper specifications. As per IS 7098, DC cable should have” XLPO, flame retardant, halogen free, electron beam cross-linked, UV and ozone resistant, copper conductor, operating temperature -40 to +120 C”. While AC cable shall have “650/1100V _ Copper/Aluminium Conductor Multi-stranded_XLPE Insulated Armoured/Unarmoured, UV protected, FRLS”.

Further comes the protection of system from lightning surges, voltage surges, fault current and short circuit current etc. Defining protection equipment like SPDs, fuses, circuit breakers, Lightening arresters etc are very important for efficient system. Also remote monitoring system is an intelligent way to check the losses.

Keeping these simple points in mind can help us making a solar plant more efficient. Try to avoid doing wrong things for cost saving as it can cut cost, but it reduces the performance of the system. To meet generation guarantee, periodic operation and maintenance is very necessary.
